A good hoodie should just feel and look great without having a contrived design just to make it ‘fashion’ – there should be no difference, really. When it comes to price, the difference is related to quality, fabric, dyeing, and finishes – things you can maybe sense, but the untrained eye can’t necessarily see.

GmbH is known for its totally genderless approach to design, but that’s still quite rare. What advice would you give to someone shopping for hoodies in the opposite department?

If there is one garment that is truly universal to any gender or body, it’s the hoodie.

What materials should we be looking out for?

For winter, we prefer a brushed (on the inside) heavy weight. At least 420g, 100% organic cotton, which in the textiles industry is called fleece (not the same as what you have in a fleece jacket). The brushed material inside is both soft and warm. For warmer months, always choose one made from a lighter loopback 100% organic cotton fabric. The loopback interior helps to keep you cool and dry.

Because hoodies are often baggy, people think anything goes. But how should the perfect hoodie fit? When trying one on, what should you look out for?

A hoodie is always best a bit boxy around the shoulders, and should be roomy, never fitted. We do sometimes like cropped hoodies, but they still need to be boxy.

Do any celebs come to mind for iconic hoodie style?

Jake Gyllenhaal in Donnie Darko. Oh, also Britney Spears when she swung an umbrella at paparazzi. Those were both iconic moments for the heather grey hoodie.

Describe your go-to fit for a day spent bingeing TV.

A hoodie and boxer shorts – simple.

On the other hand, how would you style a hoodie to sit front row at a fashion show?

No differently!

How would you take care of your favourite piece to make it last?

Wash it as little as possible, and always on a cold gentle cycle.

To crop or not?

Definitely crop.

Zip-up or pullover?

Pullover.

Bright colours or black?

Black, always.

Old and trusty or new and pristine?

Old and worn in.

Everyday or statement?

Somewhere in the middle.

Brand logos, yes or no?

Yes, but not too big.

Talk me through your design process at GmbH. When you’re coming up with a new hoodie, where do you start?

A hoodie is really a staple garment, so we think about what we’d like to wear every day while still keeping it unique. It starts with the fit and fabric, and then we get artistic.

Your designs mix tailored elements with styles that are super baggy, and formal elements with casual. What are your opinions on the hoodie as formal/occasion wear?

A hoodie is never formal, but we don’t really care about rules of formal and casual. What’s suitable for an event is up to an individual. There’s this quote from David Sedaris, commenting on how American tourists when they go to Paris: “Comfort has its place, but it seems rude to visit another country dressed as if you’ve come to mow its lawns.” Choices, I guess.

We all know that style and pop culture move in cycles. Beneath the dizzying speed of today’s micro trends, however, larger shifts are taking place – slower, deeper movements tied to collective longings that are harder to define. Youth culture is usually the first to pick up on them, or rather, to grow into them and give them shape. More often than not, these shifts emerge through looking backwards, through a vague sense that something is missing, something felt more than understood, only to be rediscovered in the past.

Which brings us to the return of rock; perhaps without even rock music making a comeback. The music itself seems almost secondary today – which would be deeply offensive to the original spirit of rock’n’roll, but let’s leave that discussion on ice for now. What is returning is the style, attitude, and mythology of rock. Simply put: the idea of it.

Its appeal lies in the fact that it stands in opposition to so much of contemporary life. Rock represents freedom: freedom of thought, freedom of habits, freedom from perfection. It offers a romantic way of moving through the world, one built around self-expression, instinct and the pursuit of something that feels true. It is also about confidence – the confidence that comes from exploring who you are, or who you might become. Unsurprisingly, rock culture has always been inseparable from youth culture.

And perhaps that is why its appeal feels stronger than ever today. We are surrounded by looksmaxxing, peptides and endlessly optimised imagery. Even when the image itself is not optimised, the narrative usually is. Everything is curated, if not outright staged. What once seemed confined to social media has slowly seeped into everyday life, shaping not only how we present ourselves but how we perceive ourselves.

It was Charli XCX who first rattled the zeitgeist with “Brat” and the anti-clean-girl energy of Brat Summer two years ago. Now she seems to be taking the next logical step. “I think the dance floor is dead, so now we’re making rock music,” she declares on her latest single. To be fair, that statement might be a little unfair to the many cultures that continue to thrive on dance floors – particularly queer communities. More broadly, the tendency to treat entire cultural movements as eras to be adopted and discarded is worthy of its own article, but back to rock.

Charli XCX may be its loudest current ambassador, both musically and stylistically – gone are the wraparound rave sunglasses and playful bodysuits. Recently, she appeared in what could only be described as a textbook rock-star uniform: black skinny trousers, Wayfarer sunglasses, a black blazer cut just slightly too small, black pumps and, naturally, a cigarette in hand. It could have been a Kate Moss look from circa 2006.

I realise I’ve referenced Kate Moss in another piece already, so please forgive the obsession. But speaking as someone who grew up a rock-loving indie sleaze teenager, the atmosphere felt fundamentally different back then. Details mattered. Style mattered. Belonging mattered. Fashion was not a pose or a trend; it was identity. It was a way of recognising your people.

But enough nostalgia. Because it isn’t only Charli XCX bringing rock style back into the conversation. If you are young – or simply operating in the right corners of the internet – indie sleaze has quietly become one of the defining aesthetics of the moment. Which means skinny jeans, ballet flats, oversized sunglasses, striped long sleeves, leather dresses, knee-high boots and all the familiar signifiers are finding their way back into wardrobes.

Most major luxury houses remain surprisingly resistant to the shift, appearing more interested in broader lifestyle positioning than in responding directly to youth culture. Fortunately, plenty of brands are already embracing the mood. The recent runway show by 7 For All Mankind is one of the strongest examples. So are long-standing rock-adjacent labels like Zadig & Voltaire, now under the creative direction of Dan Sablon, alongside The Kooples and AllSaints.

And then there is Gabbriette. She embodies the contemporary rock archetype almost perfectly. The kind of person who understands the mechanics of social media while simultaneously appearing indifferent to them. Fully immersed in culture, yet somehow existing slightly outside of it. That tension is precisely what makes her compelling.

Her wardrobe is classic rock’n’roll viewed through a distinctly 2000s lens: skinny leather trousers, a white tank top, platform heels, pointed pumps. Or perhaps a flowing maxi skirt paired with a cropped curly-fur jacket. The appeal of the so-called messy-girl aesthetic lies in its apparent lack of intention after years dominated by carefully engineered trends.

The clothes themselves are rarely complicated. What matters is the person wearing them: their attitude, their energy, the way they move through the world. So by all means, wear the skinny jeans, the leather jacket and the platform boots. But more importantly, embrace what they represent.

Each Saturday, local hangouts fill with fans of Milan, Arsenal and New York City, sharing their ideas, style and love for the game. Even the new Mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, has been seen getting in on the act, wearing Arsenal jerseys on numerous occasions. From street pitches and pop-up tournaments to football-inspired brands and cafes, the sport is slowly taking over.

In this episode of City Style Guide: Football Edition, our host Jeannie Fee meets ex-professional footballer, artist and style muse Demit Omphroy in NYC. His previous life as a pro, spanning America, Asia and Europe, has shaped both his style and his artistic output. Now an established painter whose work is as expressive as his style, he finds himself at the centre of this cultural revolution in the city. Here, he teams up with designers, brands and artists not only to play and consume the beautiful game, but be inspired by it in their creativity and vision too.

What makes NYC the perfect host for this summer’s tournament?

I think it truly represents the growing intersection of sport, culture and fashion in a way that feels authentic to the people and countries we represent. It’s a place where the community feels valued over beauty and money, a place where dreams become realities, in a city that is constantly changing and growing for the better.

Why do you think there is this new wave of creatives in the city inspired by football?

My close circle of friends and brands that I work with in the football space have such a unique way of storytelling and pushing the game in new directions. There’s an authenticity to the way they have connected to the game that is beyond just the stuff we see as it’s gotten popular here in the US.

How does football play out on the pitch here?

Well, on the pitches, there’s an array of games that exist – there are the streamer and influencer leagues, which I think are great to push the sport forward from a visibility perspective. There’s also the local league games and tournaments, which consist of former ballers that love to get competitive. Co-ed games and pickup can be found all over, too. It would be remiss of me to say that there isn’t some form of fire in the belly of all players that play. I think this is because NYC is a city that’s tough to live in, and this means that there’s that desire, even if it is just a game to be forgotten the next day. There’s a pride I can appreciate and a heart that’s given to the matches – no matter the skill level.

How does football play out on the pitch here?

How has your own expression on the pitch influenced you creatively as an artist?

My expression on the pitch and my career as an artist are so intertwined. Both forms of expression are just different ways to communicate the inner self. They are a dance of technique, style, battling and overcoming struggle and adversity, in so many ways. That’s kinda what life is about, isn’t it? And for me, as I transitioned into a fine artist, I realised how that same expression, the sharing of gifts to the outside world, while simultaneously understanding more about myself, all became necessary in becoming – what I call – an artist.

What does the creative football style look like in NYC?

I have friends who remix jerseys, create more high-fashion looks and incorporate football into more elevated looks. I think it’s beautiful to see how both of those worlds exist under the same roof – and nobody bats an eye at it.

How important was style to you when you played professionally?

Style was everything! And to some purists of the game, they may disagree. But I felt there was a flair on the pitch that always matched my style off the pitch. From my clothing to my hair, to my tattoos – everything felt like a form of expression. And I truly think it all influenced my playing style.

The fashion world loves anything unexpected. If we can carry a Moschino baguette bag or step out in Loewe’s grass-covered shoes, there’s no reason our vanity can’t mimic a retro soda fountain. And as a dedicated fraghead, I wanted to see if Anna Sui’s hyper-playful creation, Violet Vibe – Eau de Toilette, could hold its weight going up against a more casual, pared-back outfit? Can a fun, fruity scent feel avant-garde rather than adolescent? To find out, I paired this scoop of surrealism with a stack of equally playful colourful jewellery and hit the pavement.

The object: Okay, adorable. It feels like pop art you can hold (and smell).

The juice: Delightful! Though I tend to go for more musky and aromatic scent profiles, I definitely don’t discriminate and was intrigued by the notes of whipped cream, apple blossom, caramel and marshmallow. On the skin, it reveals itself as a surprisingly complex, purple-floral gourmand (a fragrance that smells edible). The rich whipped cream and caramel notes are omni-present, but it’s beautifully blended without getting one-sided. Another bonus is that the sillage (lingering of perfume) is incredible. I was catching whiffs of myself all day.

The styling: I leaned into the “wrong note” philosophy, so I paired the frag with my usual casual basics, but added a layer of mismatched, funky rings. The contrast between my pared-back clothes, the playfulness of the accessories, and the sweet cloud of scent felt somehow cohesive.

The experience: There is a specific kind of confidence that comes from pulling a glass sundae out of your bag in public. You simply cannot take yourself too seriously when you smell like a luxury, über sweet dessert bar, and honestly, it felt liberating.

The number of heads turned: Countless.

What my friend said: “You smell like pastel purple.”

What I say: Delicious! My nose will never be the same.

The conclusion: We’ve spent far too long trying to look expensive. This scent is a reminder that it’s far more interesting to look – and smell – like you’re having the most fun in the room. And with that, Violet Vibe has earned a permanent spot in my perfume arsenal.

Towa Bird, a football fan living in LA, is the latest musician whose love for the beautiful game has creatively inspired her, seeping into both her music and style. From writing songs for the terraces and creating merch, to singing the national anthem at a MLS game, it’s safe to say the influence goes way beyond the pitch. With the world’s biggest football tournament hitting LA this summer, the impact of football on Towa and her fellow Angelenos is about to heat up.

What does football mean to the city of LA?

Football’s a huge deal here culturally. People find community around it, and it brings people together. I think with the tournament coming here, people are excited and invested. I hear my friends going to women’s games in LA too. I think there is much more work to be done to close the gender divide, but I’m excited about how it is growing and the progress we are seeing in the sport.

And you had one of your tracks played at the women’s club Angel City FC?

They played my song “BILLS” in the stands during a game; it was a surreal feeling. A song that I wrote in a living room now being played in front of so many people. I’m always amazed at how music can travel.

Does football influence your music?

I grew up listening to “football” anthems. I try to make an active effort to incorporate that into my songwriting, as it is such a big part of who I am.

Is there any music you have discovered through your love of football?

I remember discovering LCD Soundsystem through a particular football video game! There is so much good alternative rock and Britpop that surrounds football culture – they often intersect in my brain.

What are your favorite terrace tracks?

Does football culture also influence your personal style?

I love wearing Fred Perry zipped to the top! Polo button-ups with the collar popped too. If you know, you know.

How do you mix this style with a more LA feel?

LA style is a bit more casual, so it’s nice to pair things with baggy jeans instead of chinos, for example.

Do you think the city’s own style has influenced how the game is played and consumed here?

LA is such a diverse city, and you can see that in football culture here. People bring influences from all over the world. It feels less traditional than in other cities I grew up in, and more like a blend of different cultures.

You released a football shirt as band merch, what was the inspiration behind this?

Growing up playing football is a huge part of my identity, so I wanted to release something that felt very personal to me. The logo includes a T.B., my initials, and the colours are representative of the Filipino flag. It also has “BIRD” written on the back.

Easy. Japan’s away kit.

But if, like me, you are a fearless glow getter, this PDRN Peptide Serum is a must try. From Seoul to Hollywood, the people are obsessed. So, in the name of research and getting the glow, I had to take it for a spin…

Looks like: PINK. Opening the package and being met by the instantly recognisable pink bottle felt like meeting a mini serum-sized pop star.

Feels like: It’s thick, velvety with a bit of bounce to it. Thicker than your standard Hyaluronic Acid, but on application melts into a more fluid consistency that absorbs quickly.

Smells like: I have to admit, given its salmon origins, my first sniff was a dubious one. I was, in fact, greeted by a light and clean floral scent. Think high-end spa, not sushi bar.

How I applied: After cleansing, on a slightly damp face, I smoothed the serum across my skin. Starting with the cheek bones, where you want the glow poppin’, before moving to the chin, forehead and neck.

What I wore it with: To seal the deal and lock in the goodness, I applied a hydrating moisturiser and of course, SPF.

The results: The glow is instant. The hydrating Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin B12 and Glycerin give you an on-the-spot fresh-faced, bouncy look. The real magic, the deeper level cellular repair, however, takes 4-6 weeks. As they say, good things come to those who are consistent with their skincare.

What my friend said: “Serving fish!”

What I say: The real appeal was how easily I could integrate the serum into my routine. As a self-confessed skincare addict, I like to have variety of active ingredients on the roster at any one moment. So, a product that I can slip into the mix with my Vitamin C and Retinol is a big win.

How’s it showing up?

Preppy – the forever trend that evolves and shows up in new ways every year. This summer, it’s turning up more sophisticated than usual. You might’ve already taken note of fashion’s obsession with books, as brands like Miu Miu launch book clubs and supermodels like Kendall Jenner pose next to Joan Didion paperbacks in picture-perfect locations. This trend is running off that energy combined with classic clubhouse cues.

How can I get in on it?

This projection of intelligence intertwined with luxury is no doubt informing the current wave of preppy, which needs to complement the copy of Anna Karenina in your one hand and the tennis racket in the other. That means: soft knits thrown over the shoulder, loose ties to accessorise, sporty polos offset by luxe materials like suede and perhaps a perfect kitten heel for that chic librarian vibe.

Pastel-maxxing

How’s it showing up?

In our last trend report detailing AW25, we wrote about the “’70s pop of colour” trend which saw bright, saturated colours stand out against cool greys and neutrals tones. Optimism appears to be driving the colour palette of this summer trend – neutrals are substituted with bright, comforting pastels. Sometimes it’s not the fabric, logo or silhouette that makes an outfit, but a strong sense of colour.

How can I get in on it?

According to Pantone, Dusty Rose and Tea Rose, Acacia Yellow and Muskmelon Orange are trending this season; while forecasting tool Coloro predicts Blue Aura to be a highlight. Style this trend by combining two base pastel colours with the top and bottom half of your outfit, and slipping in notes of a third (or even fourth) shade in your accessories and underlayers.

On the beach

How’s it showing up?

If the buttoned-up collars of the “Book-club-to-tennis-club pipeline” aren’t appropriate during your beach-filled Euro summer holiday, then this trend’s breezy v-necks and swimwear are sure to be comfortable alternatives. Last summer saw flip-flops as the controversial star of Paris Fashion Week Men’s, and this season sees that holy grail of lazy footwear take to feet off the runway. Elsewhere, this trend is driven by the need for a travel wardrobe that works just as well on the beach at daytime as it does dining al fresco at night.

How can I get in on it?

Combine geometrical, asymmetrical and fashion-forward swimwear with lightweight layers that can survive the sand. Linen, see-through mesh and silky fabrics you can drape over your gear is what’ll turn a casual beach outfit into a White Lotus-level look.

Tailoring-lite

How’s it showing up?

Tailoring in summer? We know, it sounds like a sweaty mess waiting to happen, the opposite of how one should feel when getting dressed. But make no mistake, this most Italian of trends is in no doubt led by a renewed fascination with the late, great Giorgio Armani, who passed away last September. Elegant, understated formal wear and suiting is stripped back in breathable fabrics, removed of its padding and interior structure.

How can I get in on it?

Not quite what the lawyers and business people heading to work are wearing, consider this trend as more appropriate for an event, an evening out or even those moments when just wanna get dressed up. Your starting point is a loose blazer in lightweight fabrics such as linen, cotton or tropical wool. After that, dress it down with open-collar shirts, sandals and even shorts (if you can find a pair that match).

“Fit” ’fits

How’s it showing up?

You can’t have a trend report in this century without featuring something unmistakably sports-focused. On the other end of the trend totem pole and in stark contrast to Tailoring-lite, we have the retro sportswear of “Fit” ’fits. From Harry Styles flaunting tiny running shorts on the street and in music videos, to the reality that more people are hitting the gym than ever (2025 saw a 5.8% increase in memberships in Europe alone), fitness is booming and fashion is mirroring it.

How can I get in on it?

Though sporty, this trend doesn’t include outfits that any serious athlete would exercise in. Consider this the ideal trend for your post-gym outings with looks built on track tops, running shorts, faded cottons and the low-profile sneakers that have defined the 2020s. Strike a balance between old-school basics, like adidas trackpants, with fashion-focused accessories.

Nautical Boho

How’s it showing up?

Like preppy, boho never really dies, it just reinvents itself. In April, style expert Afaf Fi Seyam (@zeopatra) explained boho’s nautical iteration: “It’s the romance and spirit of Boho juxtaposed with structured elements like jackets, hats, leather boots and shoes, and corsetry.”

How can I get in on it?

Try to lean more boho and less pirate to keep from falling overboard and into costume territory. One way of doing this is to build your look around a modern staple, such as a signature pair of jeans (find your perfect pair here). Meanwhile, bring the flair with shirts and skirts in white, adorned with lace and ruffles, layered underneath Napoleon jackets with leather accessories for contrast.

Turquoise tones

How’s it showing up?

When hints of power dressing popped up on the runway and WGSN crowned Transformative Teal as the 2026 colour of the year, we were bound for a turquoise trend. Unlike the laidback On the Beach, this extravagant wardrobe has more in common with the maximalism of the ocean than the lounge chairs facing the shoreline. So bold, so ’80s, so Miami Vice.

How can I get in on it?

Like with any outfit built around a single colour, the tones and materials should vary to create contrast. Consider combining swimwear and accessories in electric shades of turquoise – closer to the Mediterranean – with textured tops and bottoms in darker, deeper Atlantic tones.

Romancing the ’fit

How’s it showing up?

The status of our relationship with romance is that it’s “complicated” and this trend makes that visible. We love to fantasise about love – as seen in the lace, satin, polka dots and other Addison Rae-approved details showing up across fashion. But we’re also fed up with the current landscape of romance, as embodied by Lily Allen’s heartbreak album West-End Girl, currently performed on tour. As fashion, this manifests in looks that are as whimsical as they are defiant – it’s the dreaminess of the art direction in Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights, alongside the ferocity of Charli XCX’s industrial score.

How can I get in on it?

Use soft, delicate fabrics in a cold colour palette as your starting point: lace, silk, linen and other materials that breathe in the summer. Garments like blouses, skirts, scarves and shorts, rendered in time-worn shades of sky blue, off-white and yellow. What do you mean by ‘retro-style sportswear’?

It was sleek leggings and crop tops for women, purely functional and discreet styles for men, muted and pastel tones for all. Retro-style sportswear is the antithesis to beige pilates princess- (or prince, for that matter) core. Taking inspiration from the soft, cotton leisurewear of 1970s’ campuses and the vibrant, fluro-toned athletic apparel of the ’80s and ’90s, this trend takes an anything-goes view on sportswear. It’s luminous cycling shorts paired with rugby-style sweaters, bowling bags for your gym gear and statement t-shirts for your next strength training session.

So, why’s it trending?

Everyone is trying to keep active these days, right? Be it by joining a gym or taking up running, sports are an integral part of our leisure time. It makes sense then that not only would we want to shake up what we wear to the gym, but that sports and workout wear would also infiltrate our style in new ways. This trend goes deeper than that, too. It expresses a shift away from the minimal, clean-lined dress codes that have dominated fashion for the past half-decade or more. In contrast, this nostalgic look is about ditching uniform aesthetics in favour of free and easy styles that encourage mixing and matching across eras and genres, and even sports.

How’s it showing up?

Perhaps, the OG style icon for this trend is Princess Diana darting around London in peach-coloured bicycle shorts, an oversized cotton sweatshirt, tennis socks and chunky running shoes. That’s the vibe in a single look. More recently, there was Charli xcx in a ’90s-style two-toned nylon windbreaker from Saint Laurent’s resort 2026 collection, Paul Mescal in his iconic Gaelic football shorts or loose tennis-inspired layers at Loewe’s spring/summer show.

The key pieces to shop?

So, you want to nail the trend but not sure where to start? Luckily, there are a few key pieces to help you get the look with ease. First, it’s all about the shorts – the shorter the better. Think tiny adidas gym shorts in classic colourways like varsity reds and blues. Next up, it’s a roomy sports jacket or windbreaker. The rave-era style half-zip is the ultimate choice – the brash antidote to the svelte styles of recent years. Go loud and proud with clashing colours, high-vis stripes or Day-Glo shades. At the other end of the spectrum, opt for stripey polo shirts in 100% cotton for that 1970s’ collegiate feel, neat track-ready running shoes and a spacious canvas hold-all, big enough to carry them.

We all love fashion. There’s perhaps no greater feeling than nailing a banger outfit, experimenting with your sense of style, or the eureka moment of finding a piece of clothing that resonates with you so perfectly it has you asking “Where have you been all my life?” Unfortunately, there’s a price to pay for our love of clothes and it’s not just the one we see at checkout, but the societal and environmental impacts that result from our shopping habits. Fortunately, we’re not alone in trying to balance our love of shoes with our concern for the planet. For that reason, we asked four professionals working in both sustainability and fashion to share their experience finding that balance, as well as list their favourite brands and biggest tips when it comes to shopping more sustainably.

Anaïs, Senior Sustainability Content Manager

In my job: I bring content to our customers that inspires them to wear their wardrobe better and be more mindful about the items they buy and own – check out our Closet Care episodes <3.

How do you balance being interested in fashion and caring about the planet?

Being more intentional about what I buy and seeing each piece as more than a commodity. I search for quality pieces that are timeless and versatile, which fit my style and that I’ll love for years to come, while giving them the proper care they deserve. I’m still influenced and tempted to purchase items that I might not need or that don’t fully fit my style, but it’s a journey and trying to be more mindful is a start.

Is there a brand that’s especially motivating to you right now?

I find Filippa K particularly inspiring. What really resonates with me is their focus on creating timeless designs and key staple pieces that are perfect for building a versatile wardrobe. I really appreciate the thoughtful cuts and the feel of their pieces – they’re the kind of clothes you can wear again and again as they never go out of style.

What’s the most rewarding thing about your job?

When I get to bring content to our customers that encourages them to think differently about their relationship with fashion, what they buy and what they already own. It’s like sparking a little moment of reflection and empowerment.

My three biggest tips for making a purchase:

1. Think before buying

It seems obvious but we’ve all been there, buying on an impulse and regretting it after or not wearing it. I would put my item in my wishlist and give it a week or two. If by then I still like it, I’d get it!

2. The “5 Outfit” Rule

Before buying a new item, imagine it styled into five different outfits using pieces you already have in your wardrobe.

3. Check product materials

On Zalando, one can filter items with a product standard. Those items have third-party certifications and standards, and have been produced with the environment in mind.

With those tips in mind, what’s one item on your wishlist?

Juliana, Senior Manager for Circular & Sustainable Products

In my job: I co-develop our Product Sustainability Framework, covering environmental and animal welfare minimum standards, and the criteria for highlighting products with sustainability-related attributes (which you can filter for those “product standards”). I also support sustainability communications, circular design, and the adoption of innovative materials, all helping us shift to better products and move closer to net zero carbon emissions.

How do you balance being interested in fashion and caring about the planet?

Fashion and sustainability don’t have to be opposites, it’s all about being intentional. For me, it means slowing down, moving beyond fast fixes, and reconnecting with the joy of getting dressed. I focus on quality over quantity, support brands that are transparent and working to reduce their impact, and choose lower-impact materials and circular products wherever possible. I love exploring second-hand, reimagining pieces I already own, and finding creativity in how I style them. Style should evolve, but not at the expense of the planet.

Is there a brand that’s especially motivating to you right now?

I’ve been really inspired by Malene Birger lately. I had the chance to work with the brand and see firsthand how they’re approaching sustainability in a thoughtful way. I appreciated learning about their work with upcycling, it’s encouraging to see creative solutions explored within such a refined, modern aesthetic. For me, their pieces strike a rare balance: they feel fresh and expressive, yet still timeless, which makes them all the more meaningful in a world that often moves too fast.

What’s the most rewarding thing about your job?

Knowing that the work I do helps shift a huge industry in a better direction. Whether it’s raising the bar with our criteria, collaborating with brand partners to address sustainability challenges or helping a product tell its sustainability story — it’s rewarding to see those efforts starting to scale and translate into what customers buy.

My three biggest tips when making a purchase:

1. Buy mindfully

Ask yourself, is it durable? Does it fit my values? Will I love and wear it for a long time? If the answer isn’t yes to all three, it might not be worth it.

2. Check the details

Look for certified materials — they’re a big part of a product’s impact. Be cautious of vague claims: check percentages, and whether the sustainability attribute applies to the whole product or just a part of it.

3. Support progress, not perfection

No brand is perfect, but choosing better options drives change.

With those tips in mind, what’s one thing on your wishlist now?

Tote: I appreciate its simple design and cute detail, made with 94% recycled material and designed for remanufacturing as a near mono-material.

Daniel, Principal Circularity and Sustainable Investments

In my job: My role is split across two parts, the first is supporting the delivery of our circularity strategy, as part of our net zero ambition. We support the business on key topics, including circular products, materials, business models and end of use. On the sustainable investments side, we are proactively exploring opportunities to invest in startups that can support our wider strategy.

How do you balance being interested in fashion and caring about the planet?

I try to only buy things I need, to always do my research and pick a brand that meets my values with high quality and durable products. Also, I always test out new, more sustainable business models — since being in Berlin I’ve tried pre-owned, repair services and even a subscription-rental model.

Is there a brand that’s especially motivating to you right now?

Houdini is an amazing leader in the outdoor segment. They’ve made great progress on embedding circular product design criteria, increasing the use of recycled materials and testing new circular business models, including repair, rental, resale and take-back. Perhaps most impressively, every product comes with a lifetime warranty. My winter jacket is Houdini and I hardly take it off between November and March!

What’s the most rewarding thing about your job?

I think what keeps me going is that the topics are so important, both to me personally and also to wider society, even humanity! The fashion industry has many negative aspects and being able to, at least in some way, contribute to an improvement is rewarding.

In my role today, I get to speak to a lot of startup founders — I find them so inspiring, with such drive and determination to make change that it’s hard not to feed off their energy.

My three biggest tips when making a purchase:

1. Think about cost per wear

Price is of course a key factor in decision making, however I try to think about cost per wear, or the price divided by the number of times you wear something. If an item is expensive, but I know I’ll wear it a lot, then it might make the investment worth it.

2. Try to avoid impulse purchases

I have a rule that if I see something I like and it’s not second-hand, then I don’t let myself buy it right away. I’ll take some time to think about it and see over the next few days if I’d have worn it. It’s a good test to see if I really need or want something.

3. Check if you can buy it second hand

It’s a really amazing time to buy second hand because it’s scaling in popularity and product availability! If I find something I need and it’s a particularly expensive item, I’ll always check out Zalando Pre-owned to see if we have it — it’s a clear win-win in terms of sustainability and price point.

With those tips in mind, what’s one thing on your wishlist now?

When I shop, I think about how brands operate, what materials they use, how transparent their supply chains are and whether their sustainability goals are meaningful and impactful. Pangaia is a brand known for its sustainability commitment, timeless design and innovative materials. As a materials science company, they mostly use recycled materials and eco-friendly alternatives like grape leather. Some products are treated with natural peppermint oil to stay fresh longer and reduce the need for washing.

What’s the most rewarding thing about your job?

Seeing the real impact of our work. We don’t just talk about sustainability; we’re driving real change by engaging directly with our supply partners to raise awareness about global sustainability challenges. We ensure our sustainability claims are credible and impactful, which helps our customers make better-informed choices — sustainability progress is the power of collaboration, commitment and shared responsibility.

When it comes time to make a purchase, what are your three biggest tips?

1. Choose timeless design

An item that you can wear season after season, reducing the need to constantly update your wardrobe.

2. Look for more durable materials

Your clothes will stay in better shape for longer.

3. Care for your clothes properly

only make contact with silken, velvety and furry textures. It’s impossible for your heart and soul not to be bubbling with warmth when your head rests on a plush cushion and a throw. The cult of cosy isn’t a winter phase – it’s heaven on earth.

Freshly brewed loose tea leaves, a perfectly toasted slice of bread, journaling with morning clarity. Hugs from the softest cashmere and fluffy socks to accompany every step and daily ritual. Even the most cottony clouds would envy these cosy outfits and wardrobe.

A maximalist interior wouldn’t be complete without…

…a Carhartt WIP rug and a diamonté encrusted Versace cup. These pieces provide the sort of interior pizzazz that are not only a need, but a must-have for those maximal-inclined to take a room to the extremes of expression.

When your room calls on aesthetic extremities, it’d be a sin for the maximalist outfit to turn its back on the ‘leave no item unpatterned or uncoloured’ attitude – and these looks are going about it just right.

You call it bohemian, we call it…

…a memory cave. Natural elements – seashells, stones, wooden boxes – are scattered throughout this room, with every item intentionally selected and sealed with a unique story.

To match the naturalistic influence of the boho interior, the boho outfit we’re going for leans on elemental colours – browns, reds, blues, greens – free-flowing silhouettes and personal history woven with delicate threads.

How the retro room found you…

…nostalgia ringing at a bronze bell, fancy trays, mahogany doors open, revealing vintage panel walls, tartan and ceramic jars. There’s nothing remotely unfamiliar about this interior: it’s inviting and homey like family.

Knitted sweatshirts just like grandma’s, patched-up blazers like grandpa’s, checked shirts like the ones you grew up in, boots that are timeless and have lasted decades, and more to come.

Walking into a minimalist interior, expect…

…glass with no water spots. Utilitarian furniture. Hidden storage to hide items from the eye’s view. This life path declutters your mind, getting one step closer to transcendence.

With this level of spiritual precision in your home life, the minimalist outfit needs equal attention. Strip back to a uniform of core pieces in monochrome – to echo the Belgian designer Ann Demeulemeester, black is poetic.

The light hitting the buildings at golden hour, my grandmother’s house smelling like ragù, the chaos of scooters and beauty that feels slightly dangerous but incredibly alive.

What elements of Neapolitan visual culture find their way into your designs?

Excess, irony, devotion and contradiction. Sacred mixed with pop, elegance next to kitsch, nothing too polite, everything very emotional.

You are also a Zalando Visionary Award mentor. What are your responsibilities?

To protect young designers from shrinking themselves, help them stay radical while becoming sustainable, and remind them that their point of view is their biggest asset.

For many people, Neapolitan fashion means tailoring. What’s your own relationship with the city’s suiting heritage?

I respect it deeply, but I like to break it. Naples taught me that elegance does not mean stiffness, it means confidence.

If you created a GCDS collection purely around Neapolitan style, how would it look?

Sharp tailoring worn wrong, religious and football symbols treated like pop graphics, streetwear with baroque drama. Sexy but ironic, loud but precise.

Flashback to 2022: when TikTok fashion was fresh and the suffix ‘core’ was thrown around to label a huge wave of micro-trends. Nearly all of these micro-trends would fade into irrelevance as quickly as they emerged – such as the honorable goblin and mermaid-cores – but a rare few persisted, even informing the fashion of today. One of which is ‘blokecore’, inspired by the style of the old-school hooligans who’d watch football matches from the terrace, sporting low-profile adidas sneakers, washed jeans and boxy jerseys. As we look ahead to the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, it’s safe to say this was much more than just a microtrend.

So, what do we mean by “the new centrepiece is a football jersey”?

Just as it’s the centrepiece in any on-pitch uniform, the football jersey has become a centerpiece in both off-pitch outfits, collections and collaborations from fashion brands. From Inter Milan collaborating with Nike ACG on an exclusive collection of gorpcore-coded gear, to Oasis’ city exclusive jerseys being the most sought after merch of their reunion tour. Seeing as these are uniforms, they instantly read as a statement, standing out against all other fabrics and garments in an outfit.

How do I wear it?

Think about a football jersey like you would a Hawaiian shirt – even when in a neutral colour they’re always going to stand out, due to the glossy nature of the synthetic fabric. Since the only goals you’re scoring are your ’fits, avoid match-game fitted jerseys and opt for styles that are more casual, boxy and even slightly oversized. They always pair seamlessly with denim and in the direction of blokecore, but oftentimes make for a sharp contrast beneath a blazer. One last piece of advice before you take your shot: brush up on the team in case anyone quizzes you.

There is an old fashion saying: nothing haunts us like the things we didn’t buy. It’s a case of you know it when you feel it – if it isn’t, sometimes saying no feels better than saying yes, but that is another story entirely.

In “But I Didn’t,” we revisit the purchases we never made and the decisions we somehow still regret. Because sometimes you have to lose something in order to understand its true meaning. This first edition of “But I Didn’t” comes with a happy ending, and maybe they all will, because things tend to unfold exactly the way they should. More on that later.

What matters first is this: sometimes missing out on what you thought was right leads you to what actually is. But only if you let go. And yes, unfortunately, that applies to fashion. “But I Didn’t” is our way of saying that life gives you what you need once you stop obsessing over what you wanted.

So, to begin with a disclaimer: I’m deeply into vintage and constantly mix archival pieces into my wardrobe. I spend an unreasonable amount of time on vintage resale apps, scrolling through them the same way other people scroll Instagram. Which is exactly how I one day came across the perfect pair of vintage, knee-high black boots by Alexander McQueen on the resale site Vestiaire Collective (that Zalando has recently partnered with, amazingly).

They were from the almost mythological “Shipwreck” collection, embodying everything McQueen stood for: drama and sensuality, darkness and femininity – always theatrical, yet somehow still grounded in the reality of a woman’s desires. The leather was beautifully severe, the heel sculpted in exactly the right thickness, the toe neither too sharp nor too round. And best of all: they laced up in the back (hot!).

Another disclaimer: I grew up in the 2000s and was a genuine Indie Sleaze teenager. Seeing the aesthetics of our mid-to-late-2000s wardrobes return is cute, by the way. Naturally, Kate Moss circa 2005 will forever remain one of my ultimate style references – and as we all know, she was one of McQueen’s definitive muses. A paparazzi image of her wearing his iconic pirate boots still regularly resurfaces on Instagram mood pages for very good reason.

Back to my boots. When something precious enters your life, you know when you’re supposed to act quickly. I knew, but I didn’t. Don’t ask me why – especially because the price was almost suspiciously reasonable, and they were even my size, a notoriously impossible EU 40. But when I returned to Vestiaire Collective to finally buy them, they were gone.

And with them disappeared an entire imagined wardrobe: pencil leather skirts, washed jersey dresses, leggings with tanks. The fantasy of a boot perfect enough to work across summer, fall, winter, spring – endlessly adaptable and endlessly cool.

Still, one can never have enough black knee-high boots. There are always other options, depending on which version of yourself you want to amplify. A sharply pointed pair with just the right amount of shaft width for something sleek and severe. A softer shape with a thicker heel and croc-embossed leather for everyday elegance. Or maybe wedge boots with an open toe. Black knee-high boots rarely disappoint.

And as the story goes, once you embrace abundance (I am a spiritual girlie), things tend to return to you – or return back, in this case. A few weeks later, I reopened Vestiaire Collective, and there they were again. The original buyer must have relisted them, and back they were.

But maybe that’s the point. There is no such thing as only one perfect black knee-high boot. There are many versions, many lives, many fantasies attached to them. And somehow, the right ones tend to find their way (back) to you.

Remember jelly shoes? You know, the gummy, fisherman style sandals often available in every colour in the Pantone catalogue? If you’re a child of the ’80s and ’90s you certainly do, and seeing them might make you nostalgic, recalling memories of family trips from a distant past; some sweet, some possibly triggering. But would you ever have imagined they’d go viral in the year 2025 – not as a rediscovery for children made by a generation of millennial parents, but as a legitimate high fashion trend, set off by a €900 pair made by The Row?

As a young boy growing up in Virginia the jelly shoe *unsurprisingly* didn’t quite make it onto my size 4 feet, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who missed the moment. I had to see what all the fuss was about, not only as an adult living in the big city, but at a time when both sandals and men exposing their feet are a hotly debated topic — even Rick Owens launched an OnlyFans for his tootsies last year. It was only a few years ago that loafers started trending beyond suit-wearing bankers, and now are worn by even the most diehard sneakerheads. Could the Moschino fisherman style jelly sandals be the next step, offering a more breathable alternative to combat summer’s rising temperatures?

First impressions

Looks like: A sandal straight out of The White Lotus.

Feels like: They were made to be trekked in. Not up a mountain, but a glorious hill on the Amalfi Coast to reach the air-conditioned sanctity of your Airbnb. Unlike actual jelly, the rubber feels quite strong, as though it’s made to handle the 50K steps of a Euro summer vacation.

Hype potential: It’s gotta be high, seeing as the jell-ment™ is already on the rise. Of course, this exact Moschino pair might not be the face of the entire trend and its flagrant branding is only for the boldest of feet.

On the road

What I wore them with: Dressing them up (or down depending on how you see it) was as easy as fixing a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The trousers were the most important ingredient – aside from the sandals – and I went with this hickory-striped pair by Stan Ray that fit like a breeze. I kept the rest of the ’fit simple to balance the gold logo on the sandals and the pattern on the trousers: white tee, black cotton blazer, and Burberry frames styled to completion.

How they made me feel: Like I was on vacation in my own neighbourhood, or catching a flight back in time to Miami beach in the ’80s: real Miami Vice, Grand Theft Auto Vice City energy.

Would be perfect for: A dream summer holiday in paradise, but also when you need a breathable and protective piece of capital F Fashion to level up your basic outfit for grocery runs.

Could double as: A fancy little holder, fit for the most expensive candle or jar of jelly you own.

The perfect capsule wardrobe might just be fashion’s greatest riddle – one that TikTokers, online magazines, and Substack writers are still trying to crack. But the truth is, there’s no formula to follow. It’s deeply personal. Which means: the perfectly curated capsule wardrobe looks different for everyone. And that’s exactly what makes it so intriguing.

Naturally, we’re always curious to see what makes it into someone’s rotation. This time, we asked our stylist Camille to share the non-negotiables in her capsule wardrobe – the pieces that define her personal style and shape her everyday uniform.

Meet Camille

I’d describe my style as: Romantic, grunge, with a bourgeois Blair Waldorf touch. I also always play with volume!

My gateway to fashion was: The Balmain 2010 era. I have a double-buttoned jacket – and at least seven more pieces – from that time in my wardrobe.

You’ll always see me wearing: A big bag. They’re so practical, especially in spring when the weather is unpredictable and you’re constantly taking layers on and off. It’s also ideal for a workaholic like me – I bring my laptop everywhere.

You’ll never see me wearing: Long dresses. The more mini, the better (except for the bag, obviously).

Now that you know more about Camille, let’s see her selection.

A playful jacket and edgy heels

Camille’s notes: On rainy spring days, I like to balance the season’s softness with edgy footwear – it adds a nice contrast. My wardrobe still holds a lot of pieces from the 2010s, but mixing in sharper, more experimental items – like these heels – keeps things feeling fresh. This jacket’s subtle ruffle detail adds a coquette touch that plays well against the tougher elements.

A double-breasted dress and patterned accessories

Camille’s notes: Statement dresses are my go-to for instantly elevating a look. I chose a double-breasted, schoolgirl-style plissé dress – I love a good double-button closure. For a playful twist, I mixed patterns across the hat, tights, and bag. To balance the volume and pull everything together, I added chunky suede boots. They echo the fuzzy textures of the hat and bag nicely.

A Victorian shirt, a big bag, denim mini shorts, and loafers

Camille’s notes: This is hands down one of my favourite combos. The oversized Victorian shirt brings all the drama, and pairing it with denim mini shorts keeps the vibe cool and laid-back. I love how the big bag adds even more volume – it’s kind of ridiculous, in the best way. It also fits everything I need, making it a true essential in my wardrobe. The loafers go with everything, and for this look, pull it all together, giving the outfit the perfect balance of grunge and chic. I always like to add a cap to make it sporty, plus wayfarers on top for that classic 2010s touch.

A little black dress

Camille’s notes: The little black dress is a true classic. It’s versatile – perfect for a night out or for everyday wear. This look, for instance, balances a party vibe with something more casual. I also love adding little bows here and there; they offer just the right playful touch. I layered a polo underneath for a pop of colour and that 2010 American Apparel energy. The derby-style heels keep it classic, while the pink bag and cat-ear cap add a girly twist that makes the whole look feel fun and unexpected.

A sailor top

Camille’s notes: I love a coquette-sailor-vibe because it’s playful yet polished. Plus, sailor and marine-inspired pieces always feel so effortlessly French. To balance the girly elements, I added a structured, more “grown-up” bag to ground the look. Pushing it further into that dreamy coquette aesthetic, I added soft beige and white lace details.
